The Homeland’s Owners: Five hours documentary

Aljazeera embarks upon one of the most sensitive issues in the Palestinian cause..

Doha/Qatar – Wed 20th Oct 2010 – Aljazeera network tackles an extremely sensitive topic in a documentary series entitled “the homeland’s owners” extending over five televised hours.

The series, to be broad casted starting Thursday 21st of Oct 18:00GMT, covers the topic of Palestinians inside Israel, commonly referred to as “Israeli Arabs” in the media.

The series explores an increasingly volatile issue, especially given the recent proposition by the Israeli government of a law forcing non-Jews to swear an oath of loyalty to a Jewish state.

A proposition that raises question marks about the future of the land’s original owners who live inside Israel and undergo daily discrimination in all aspects of life.

What does it mean to be Palestinian and Israeli at the same time, to be burdened by the Palestinian suffering and carry an Israeli passport? This is a dilemma that is rarely understood by anyone apart from the one and half million citizens trying everyday to find answers to unanswerable questions.

Often ignored by the Arab world and the international community, and even deemed in existent, the documentary follows their journey through sixty two years since the establishment of Israel. A journey filled with suppression, eighteen years of military rule, daily struggles and bloodshed.

The director, Rawan Damen, carries out an investigation with the help of fifty interviewees all of whom are Israeli Palestinians from different cities and villages.

Damen has recently been awarded prizes in international film festivals in Qatar and Spain for her 2008 four-hours documentary Al-Nakba, currently available on youtube in 6 different languages:

Her latest accomplishment traverses through time from 1799 till 1948 showing the roots of the Palestinian Nakba, and presenting archive that is shown on TV for the first time.
