I want Canada to win of course, but I just caught first period of Russia-Latvia. O. M. G. Surely only the 1970s Canadiens, and maybe the Coffey Oilers, were as much or more fun (quibble re. Ovechkin most joyful player ever: remember Pointu?). When you were growing up, this kind of super-shinny was how you imagined yourself playing the game with your buddies, when you all made the NHL. As much as the NHL has improved its game, it's gonna be really hard to go back to NHL hockey, after watching the Crazy Russkies. From Totalitarian Tikhonovianism to Over the Top Ovechkin Individualism, has the world changed, or what? Awesome! Yet another reason to like Gorbachev, without whom this may taken another couple of years. Communism to Ovechkinism, 20 years on. Yee-Ha!
PS. Pity about the gangsterism, Chechnya, human rights abuses, etc.etc., well, quite a long list, actually...
