UN Documents:The Case of Sheikh Jarrah Neightbourhood in East Jerusalem

The Orient House structure in East Jerusalem, in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood is one of the houses erected to the north of the Old City by the prominent Palestinian al-Husseini family, as part of the spurt of private construction beyond the Old City walls by wealthy Muslims in the late nineteenth century. The house was built in 1897 by Ismail Bak al-Husseini.

Sheikh Jarrah is a Palestinian East Jerusalem residential neighbourhood situated to the north of the Old City in occupied East Jerusalem. The neighbour hood is home to around 2,800 Palestinian residents and includes many diplomatic missions and well-known landmarks, such as the Orient House, the American Colony Hotel and the Palestinian National Theatre .

Owing to its strategic location, Israeli settler groups have in recent years made persistent efforts to take over land and property in Sheikh Jarrah in order to establish new settlements in the area. As a result, over 60 Palestinians have lost their homes and another 500 remain at risk of forced eviction, dispossession and displacement in the near future.
