Those dastardly Libs! I bet they would never agree to an investigation of their time in office... Inquiry Motion
Oh, so they voted for an inquiry on detainee issue for period from 2001-present? Well, that's just posturing, they'd never be serious to confront Govt if refused to call Inquiry... Order of Parliament
Oh, they were the ones that moved the Order of Parliament, to get uncensored documents to committee? Though to be fair, committee had already ordered their production, under Dewar motion, supported by Bloc & Libs
If you study Lee's response to Nicholson, recognition of Parliamentary Supremacy remains a core issue, which no Inquiry resolves, in and of itself. At a very weak minimum, it would need, as Lee asked, a Govt statement recognising Parliamentary Supremacy, along with an inquiry, and that is as weak a minimum as you're gonna get. What we need are really two things: recognition of Parliamentary Supremacy through production of uncensored docs as ordered, and an inquiry, as per the NDP motion of Dec. 01, supported by Libs & Bloc. Oh, and of course, a motion of censure of the Govt for going rogue and ignoring an Order of Parliament for over three months and counting. But that, along with an Inquiry and a Govt statement from AG/PM recognising Parl Supremacy, is an incredibly weak and generous minimum on behalf of Parliament. Still, it upholds minimal standards of parliamentary honour.
O'Malley, once again, has the correct analysis
