"‘The Robert Droid Project’ is a strange hybrid, a collision of expressive paint handling and science fiction subject matter.
My paintings are populated with Cyborg’s, Mutants, Androids, and Aliens. The highly conspicuous brushwork wraps around the depicted figures, searching for the vestiges of humanity in creatures whose forms are often only nominally humanoid.
For me the painting process is a literal form of ‘shape shifting’. The works bear the traces of the push and pull of direct drawing in paint. Subject matter which many would consider to be ‘LOWBROW’ is fertile ground for my painting process the irregular morphology of the creatures I paint enables free brushwork and direct expression.
I have an ongoing fascination with the HENSHIN CYBORG toyline. I’m also inspired by current Japanese vinyl KAIJU and vintage pulp sci-fi book covers.
I begin most paintings by loading up the canvas with a lot of paint and pulling the figure out of the substance. Through this process the figures emerge with a flesh and blood quality, a muscularity that shifts them into hybrid territory somewhere between toy and animate being.
The works are sometimes raw, sometimes refined, but always evolving."
