Not often one gets to see a head of government openly revel in his own cynicism and smilingly note it as justification, without even any pro-forma argument about the underlying issues. He's actually asking public to admire him for his Sean Avery qualities?! Maybe in the bubble, esp. given how weak & subservient surrounding Cons are, this behaviour is esteemed. But not outside. In its way,
Mansbridge interview was one of weirdest I've ever heard, seen or read, entirely due to weirdo being interviewed. Two money quotes from self-congratulating, self-loving weirdo cynic. 1. "Difficulties" (quelle chutzpah from proroguer in chief) arising from House & Senate re. crime bills, "particularly Senate" : "we have some opportunities to fill some Senate vacancies and deal with that problem". 2. Detainee issue & order of Parliament as motivation for prorogation: "polls have been very clear … that that's not on the top of the radar of most Canadians."
PS. Makes me think of Stillman Barcelona film, and text-subtext joke. Harperism: government without subtext. Read on for pleasure & elucidation.
Fred: Clarify something for me.
Since I've been waiting for the fleet,
I've read a lot.
Ted: Really?
Fred :One thing that keeps
cropping up is ''subtext.''
Plays, novels, songs, all have a subtext...
...which I take to mean
a hidden message or import of some kind.
Subtext, we know. But what do you call
the message or meaning...
...that's on the surface, open and obvious?
They never talk about that.
What do you call
what's above the subtext?
Ted: The text.
That's right, but they never talk about that.
